Newcastle United could lose one of their most important players in the January transfer window to Premier League rivals Manchester City.
City want to sign a new midfielder, according to The Times, and are interested in Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes.
Guimaraes is open to leaving Newcastle for City either in January or next summer. City were keen on a deal for him last summer but decided not to trigger his £100 million release clause.
City manager Pep Guardiola is a huge fan of Guimaraes. He described the 27-year-old as ‘an exceptional holding midfielder’ who is ‘aggressive, with the ball or without the ball’ in the Daily Mail in March.
Newcastle have to make sure that they keep Guimaraes until the end of the season. Losing the midfielder in the middle of the campaign would be a huge blow.
The Magpies are only seven points off fourth spot in the Premier League table. There is still a chance they could end up in the Champions League places.
Newcastle have lofty ambitions for the future. They were playing in the Champions League last term and will want to secure their spot for next season.
It would send a worrying message to the fans if Newcastle sold Guimaraes in the middle of the season.
