Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has admitted his old side wouldn’t be where they are if they had Arsenal’s injuries this season.

Liverpool appear to be out on their own without any rivals in the Premier League title race at this stage, 13 points clear of their nearest rivals Arsenal and 19 points ahead of third place.

Arne Slot’s side have played one game extra, but 10 points is still a very large gap to overcome, and the Gunners don’t look like winning their extra game anyway.

Speaking on Match of the Day to former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, Gary Lineker suggested that injuries were starting to tell for Arsenal in this current run.

“They really are,” Warnock agreed. “When you’ve got Havertz at nine goals, Martinelli six, Saka five. If Liverpool lost Salah, Jota, and Diaz and Gakpo, they wouldn’t be in the position they’re in.”

It’s certainly not any fault of Liverpool’s that they’ve managed to keep their key players fit at the right times to pick up the results they needed.

Nor is it their fault that they seem to be facing opponents without their best players on a weekly basis.

Last week, Erling Haaland was out for Manchester City. This week, Alexander Isak was out for Newcastle United. Both strikers have scored in every Premier League appearance against Arsenal this season, but neither were available against Liverpool.

But when luck goes your way, you need to capitalise on it, and Liverpool have done so.

Arsenal’s luck is completely out right now, and they can only hope things turn around in the Champions League ties coming up. The Gunners still have one shot at silverware this season, even if the Premier League campaign is all but done.
