Yann Sommer feels that Inter Milan have the best defense in Europe since his arrival at the club.

The Swiss international spoke to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, in an interview published in today’s print edition. He also reacted to links with Brazilian keeper Bento.

This season, Sommer has kept a clean sheet as often as he hasn’t for Inter.

Some of that is certainly down to the veteran keeper’s work.

Sommer has made plenty of outstanding saves for Inter since he joined from Bayern Munich last summer.

But it’s certainly not just down to the keeper.

In fact, Emil Audero has kept clean sheets in both of the matches where he’s started in place of Sommer.

Yann Sommer Hails “Best In Europe” Inter Defense

Sommer said that one thing he noticed when he arrived at Inter was “The fact that everyone already had a good understanding on the pitch.”

“The distances. The mechanisms. The compactness.”

“Those aspects were all very good already,” the 35-year-old noted.

“It can take some time to refine the buildup phase from the back,” Sommer continued.

“At Bayern I didn’t have time for that. But here, after a few months we already have an extraordinary system in place.”

“Inter’s defense is certainly one of the best [in Europe],” continued Sommer.

The Swiss international remarked that “It’s extraordinary having defenders like that in front of me. Fighting like crazy to protect our goal.”

“It’s all the work as a team that’s fundamental,” Sommer said of Inter’s defensive solidity.

Meanwhile, Sommer also commented on Inter’s elimination from the Champions League by Atletico Madrid. “It was a huge disappointment,” he admitted.

“But we learned how much the little details matter,” the keeper added. “And we’ll try to do better next season.”

Then, Sommer was asked about Brazilian keeper Bento.

The 24-year-old Athletico Paranaense man is reportedly the player who Inter want to bring in as a long-term successor to Sommer.

“I don’t know what will happen,” admitted the current Inter Number One admitted.

“I haven’t spoken with the club about that yet, and I don’t know if that’s really their idea.”

“In the end the club will make their decision, and we’ll talk about it,” Sommer said.
