Benjamin Pavard says he’s thankful to Simone Inzaghi, but that Cristian Chivu is also “working well” at Inter Milan.

The French defender spoke to reporters at the Club World Cup, via FCInterNews. He gave his thoughts ahead of Inter’s Club World Cup group stage clash with Urawa Red Diamonds.

Simone Inzaghi left Inter Milan at the start of June.

The 49-year-old’s departure did not necessarily come as a complete surprise. There had been links between he and Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal for weeks prior.

Nevertheless, there was something shocking about Inzaghi’s exit.

The coach left Inter just a couple of days after they had lost the Champions League final 5-0 against Paris Saint-Germain.

Then, it was Cristian Chivu who arrived to take the place of Inzaghi at the helm of Inter.

Defender Benjamin Pavard admitted that “I joined Inter partly thanks to [Inzaghi].”

“Because I really liked the kind of football he had us playing.”

“I thank him because he made me grow as a player,” Pavard said of his former coach. “But that’s how football is – you come and go.”

“Inzaghi is a great player,” added the former Bayern Munich defender. “I wish him the best on his new adventure.”

Then, Pavard added that “Chivu is great on a personal level.”

“He talks to everyone,” the 29-year-old said of his new Nerazzurri coach.

Pavard stated that Chivu “knows how to play football, and we train very well with he and his staff.”

“We can’t respond to what he wants from us immediately,” the Frenchman admitted. “But little by little we’ll get there.”

“And in any event, he and his staff have been doing a great job since they arrived here.”

Then, Pavard admitted that “the match against Monterrey wasn’t a great one for us.”

“We were also suffering from the heat in Pasadena,” the defender noted.

“It’s certainly tough to start again after the loss in the Champions League final. But now, we have to think about the next match.”

“We’re training well. With our new coach, we’re working well. And we’ll do everything to win tomorrow.”

Of coming up against Urawa Red Diamonds, Pavard said that “we’re facing a good team.”

“In the past when I was at Stuttgart I played with Hiroki Ito, a Japanese international,” he added.

Pavard said Urawa Reds are “tactically well-organized.”
