Manager Ange Postecoglou has said that even Liverpool star Mohamed Salah would struggle in Tottenham Hotspur’s current team.

Tottenham have lost five of their last seven Premier League fixtures. Their latest defeat came last weekend when Newcastle United beat them 2-1 in their own backyard.

Spurs will host Liverpool in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

Postecoglou made a stunning claim to place his team’s difficult spell in context ahead of the game.

The 59-year-old said that even Salah would struggle to be prolific if he played for Tottenham.

He said (per the Mirror): “Mo is a world-class player, but if you put him in our team now, I’m not sure he’ll have that same level of performance because of the situation we’re in as a group.

“You need a team that’s in good form, creating opportunities, playing on the front foot, having a really solid foundation of a defence that is cohesive.

“None of these things exist at the moment. We’re relying on individual moments and you can say the same about Dom [Solanke], [Dejan] Kulusevski and Brennan [Johnson] because they are playing all the time. They’re doing the best they can.

“We’re a team that is very disrupted – that is not playing with a fluency that it can play with. We’re asking players to play in positions that they are totally unfamiliar with. That has an effect.

“But when we’re at our best, I still think you’ll see Sonny’s (Heung-min Son) return in terms of his ability to score goals and be really effective for us. I don’t think that’s diminished at all.”

Tottenham are facing a significant injury crisis at the moment, with numerous players ruled out for Wednesday’s League Cup game.

Destiny Udogie picked up a hamstring injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week, joining Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies on the sidelines.

Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin have been struggling with illness and are unlikely to be involved against Liverpool.

Postecoglou will also be without Richarlison, Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert due to a mixture of illness and injury issues.

They were forced to feature Brandon Austin in goal against Newcastle, with Fraser Forster and Guglielmo Vicario both unavailable.
