Mexican football fans have long been eager to see more of their young talents make the leap to Europe. That wish has become a reality for Stephano Carrillo and Heriberto Jurado, as both have secured exciting moves abroad.
Carrillo, 18, leaves his boyhood club of Santos Laguna to sign for Dutch giants Feyenoord. The Rotterdam side will be familiar to many Mexicans, having been the home for former Cruz Azul striker Santiago Giménez who spent three years with the club before signing for AC Milan this week.
Born in Durango, Carrillo rose through the ranks at Santos, scoring 23 goals in 29 games before earning a call-up to the first team in the Clausura 2024. Across the 18 times for the first team, his only goal came in front of his home fans against Club América.
The striker is known for his Spider-Man celebrations drawing back to his childhood, paying tribute to his favourite superhero by wearing the famous red and black ask.
"“When I was a kid, it was a show. He would tie the curtains and fly around like a spider web. He would spend hours practising, not just a soccer play, but a trick like Spider-Man would do, until he got it right.” "Manuel Carrillo, Stephano's dad to ESPN.
Feyenoord announced the deal on Wednesday afternoon, stating that Carrillo is awaiting his residency and work permit, meaning that he will have to wait to make his debut for the club.
The Dutch side sits in fifth place, trailing league leaders PSV by fourteen points. However, their attention is on the UEFA Champions League Round of 32, where they face a two-legged clash against Giménez's new team, AC Milan.
Going from the Netherlands to Belgium, Heriberto Juardo has put pen to paper on a deal to join Cercle Brugge. The Belgian outfit announced via their social media that Jurado would sign a three-and-a-half year deal, which will expire in the summer of 2028.
Jurado, 20, makes the move after spending his early days as a professional with Necaxa. The leftwinger made his debut during the 2021/22 campaign and has since made 84 appearances for Los Rayos offering seven assists and two goals.
For El Trí, he has represented the Sub 20 and 23 teams and like Carrillo, was a part of the squad that lifted the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in the summer.
His new team has reached the Round of 16 in the UEFA Conference League after finishing in the top eight of the league phase. Domestically, Cercle sits in ninth place, just three points clear of the relegation play-off spots.
The former Necaxa man will take on a familiar face on Sunday, 16th March, as he heads to the capital to face an Anderlecht side that recently signed Pumas winger César Huerta earlier this month.
