Chelsea have been handed a boost with Romeo Lavia in position to return to the match day squad and he could feature against Morecambe according to reports.

Lavia joined the Blues in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth up to £58m, but his time at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by injury and he only played 32 minutes of football last season.

The midfielder has fared better this season, although he’s missed a number of games with injury and was once again absent for the trip to Selhurst Park.

Lavia in position to return against Morecambe

Lavia is such an important player for Chelsea and his absence has left the Blues very light in midfield and has meant Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo have had to play 90 minutes week in week out across the festive period.

There’s been talk of potentially recalling Lesley Ugochukwu or Andrey Santos to add much needed depth to the midfield but it remains to be seen if that happens.

Lavia has been absent since coming off at half time against Tottenham, and he was arguably the best player on the pitch in the first half of that game.

Chelsea have only managed to win one of the subsequent five league games the Belgian has missed, but journalist Kieran Gill has reported Lavia is line to return to the match day squad and could feature in the FA Cup next weekend.

He took to X.com and said:

“Romeo Lavia in position to return to Chelsea’s match-day squad moving forward. Could be included for FA Cup tie vs League Two Morecambe next Saturday.”

It’s certainly a welcome boost for the Blues and the game represents a chance to make changes and see some of the younger players in action.

The third round tie also gives Chelsea the opportunity to get a confidence boosting win before heading into games against Bournemouth, Wolves and Manchester City.
