Enzo Maresca’s press conference today was all about the injury to Wesley Fofana and how it would affect Chelsea’s season.

With Benoit Badiashile out until February – and possibly longer – the team are looking thin in central defence.

Asked whether the club would consider going into the market to buy a new player, Maresca certainly didn’t deny it. In fact, he gave the strongest impression yet that they might:

“”We’ll see [about buying players], now the focus is on tomorrow’s game, that is an important game like the rest, so the focus is just about tomorrow, but for sure these two players they’re going to be out for a long time, so we’ll see what we decide to do in the market.”

Chelsea spending potentially decided by young defender’s first impression

We think a lot of what happens next will depend on Enzo Maresca’s assessment of young Aaron Anselmino, the defender who we bought in the summer who has been on loan back at Boca Juniors until his recall this week.

Maresca mentioned that he needed time to assess the defender before any decision was made on his future:

“At the moment the plan is to keep him here, to allow him to work with us and then to take a decision.”

It seems that if they they will take a look at him in training this month and then decide if they want to keep loan him out or potentially use him to fill in for the injured first team players:

“He’s here it’s because we think he’s a good player and he can help us. But for sure he’s very young and he’s coming from Argentina, completely different culture, different football, different level. So he needs time for that.”

So Maresca’s assessment of the 19 year old could decide whether or not we buy a player this month.
