Enzo Maresca confirms one player from his Conference League final team – it would be “unfair” to leave him out

Rather confusingly, Chelsea are taking their press conference for the Conference League final today, even though they play against Nottingham Forest on Sunday ahead of this final next Wednesday.

That’s meant plenty of questions about what team the Chelsea boss will pick for both games. When asked previously, he’s been pretty coy about it. For the majority of the season he’s played almost totally different teams in the Premier League and the Conference League, but he always insists he will pick the best team for the circumstances, and in this case that surely means he plays his Premier League team against Real Betis next week.

“For each game, we try to play our strongest XI. In the Conference League, we have played with different players and we will see for the final,” Maresca said.

If anyone looks really shattered after Sunday’s game perhaps they could miss out, but it seems unlikely that will be the case given there’s two full recovery days in between. Perhaps the likes of Reece James or Romeo Lavia who are still being treated with caution will only start one of the two.

Then there’s Nicolas Jackson who will be able to play the final but not against Forest due to his suspension.

Jorgensen set for Conference League final appearance

We do know one B team player who start thought – goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who has only missed one game en route to the final:

“Filip is going to play the final because he played all the competition. It will be unfair now if he doesn’t play the final. For sure, Filip is going to play because he deserves to play,” Maresca said.

Other Blues sound likely to miss out

We understand that logic, but in that case surely the likes of Tyrique George, Josh Acheampong and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall should play, as it would be “unfair” for them to miss out too, having racked up so many minutes in the competition.

Unfortunately, none of the journalists present picked up on that and followed up.
