Trent Alexander-Arnold is taking a ‘wait and see’ approach to a new Liverpool contract with uncertainty over the Reds’ prospects for next season under Arne Slot.

That’s according to Conor Coady, the former Liverpool defender who is Alexander-Arnold’s England colleague.

Alexander-Arnold, 25, cut an emotional figure on Sunday as Anfield bid farewell to Jurgen Klopp after nine years in charge.

The right back was a mainstay of the Klopp regime ever since making his debut under the German in the EFL Cup against Tottenham back in October 2016.

He’s now played over 300 matches for his boyhood club, winning the highest honours in the game, including the Champions League, the Premier League and the Club World Cup.

However, Trent has got an expiring contract on Merseyside with his terms running out in 2025.

The England international - who was named in the provisional group for Euro 2024 - is one of a trio of high-profile Liverpool stars out of contract at the end of next season along with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

It will be a priority for new sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG’s new CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, to get their futures sorted, but until there’s a clear picture for how the Reds perform under Arne Slot then Trent will hold out.

That’s what Coady told The Monday Night Club, where he relayed his concerns that unless Liverpool can convince the superstar they can fight for trophies on a regular basis then Alexander-Arnold might be considering his options having been so close to Klopp.

Trent 'desperate' for trophies

“He’s certainly a player who is desperate to play at the highest level, every single season. He’s that good, for one, because he’s an incredible football player. His mentality is to be playing and fighting for titles every single season,” the 31-year-old said.

“Jurgen Klopp made this announcement [that he’s leaving] quite early. So him knowing  that Jurgen Klopp was leaving, how close he was to Jurgen Klopp, I definitely think he would be looking into the season and going, okay, how have we started, how are we playing, how much have things changed, are we going to be playing catch-up to teams quite early, and that might be a reason on the contract situation.”

Fabrizio Romano relayed a couple of weeks ago that Real Madrid were looking to add Alexander-Arnold as a free transfer in 2025.
