Elfsborg manager Oscar Hiljemark spoke exclusively to Gianlucadimarzio.com ahead of the upcoming Europa League fixture with Roma.
The ex-Palermo and Genoa player who retired at 28, discussed his young coaching career and the lessons learned under Ivan Juric, currently Roma’s head coach.
“Juric? He brought me to Genoa, I experienced his teachings first hand. It took me months to adapt: it was a new style for me,” recounted Hiljemar.
“He wanted us to play in a 3-4-3 with a double pivot, all intensity and man-to-man,” he added.
“Today if I think about the level of Elfsborg and Roma we are on two different planets, but we don’t play just to participate: we will try. It will certainly be a great experience.”
“With Roma, whoever wins the duel has the upper hand. And clearly in that they have more quality than us. But we hope to have a few seconds here and there in the game to get out of the blocks and create goal opportunities.”
“We will have to be solid in defense and explosive in attack,” he continued.
“But they focus more on intensity, we focus on concreteness. And we will try to be fluid: we will not play a game of only transitions, nor of only possession. It will take a lot of work because they have quality in all positions, substitutions that can split the game, and they think quickly: it is a characteristic that Juric transmits to his men.”
