Speaking to Bild. Eintracht Frankfurt Sporting CEO Markus Krösche explained why he has previously rejected moves to the Premier League.

Since joining RB Leipzig in 2021, Krösche has been at the heart of Frankfurt moulding into one of the best teams in Germany for youth development. This success has resulted in the Hannover native attracting interest from Premier League clubs such as Liverpool, before their hiring of Richard Hughes as Sporting director. On why he has rejected moves to England, Krösche said:

“It is certainly a different approach in the Premier League. I am convinced that the club is the biggest thing and therefore has to make the decisions. And when a coach has the power to decide everything, these decisions are often geared towards sporting success in the short term and less towards the medium and long term. But in football, a coach is often – and I don’t mean that in a negative way – a temporary phenomenon. The club, on the other hand, remains and should make the decisions. But that is often something different in England and not a model that I would immediately prioritize. Although developments are changing there too.”

During Krösche’s time at Frankfurt, the club have won the Europa League, reached the DFB Pokal final and are currently on course to qualify for the Champions League this season. On what makes Frankfurt such a success, the former midfielder explains:

“Everyone here has their own clear area of responsibility and the opportunity to make clear decisions – that’s exactly how it makes sense. I don’t believe in huge discussion rounds in which the decisions made within the sports management are discussed again at a higher level.”

As sporting director at Leipzig, Krösche was involved in the departure of several players to Bayern Munich from the club with Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer both leaving, as well as head coach Julian Nagelsmann. Looking back at the decision to let the now Germany head coach leave, Krösche believes it was probably a mistake:

“Ultimately, Leipzig was on the way to becoming Bayern’s hunter. Letting the coach go is always an extremely difficult decision. Julian really wanted it. It’s hard to say no then – from a competitive point of view, you probably shouldn’t have done it anyway.”

With the trajectory that Frankfurt are currently on, the interest around Krösche will likely continue to grow, but as the club has shown in recent seasons, they will not make it easy to be able to part ways with such a key figure.
