Eddie Howe has been reflecting on Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park.
A brilliant run from Anthony Gordon set up Jacob Murphy to put United ahead, Newcastle the better team in that opening half, if not totally convincing.
However, Fulham the better side after the break and getting the two goals to turn it around.
As always, you can rely on Eddie Howe for total honesty, not hiding or trying to deflect from the result and performance.
Eddie Howe reflecting on what happened on Saturday – Newcastle 1 Fulham 2:
“I don’t think that we played particularly well.
“We got ourselves ahead, we conceded a couple of poor goals, we never got full control of the game like we wanted to do.
“Very disappointing overall.
“I thought both halves weren’t perfect for us.
“In the first half, we got the lead but we rode our luck at times. I don’t think we ever got control like we wanted to.
“Overall, I didn’t like the feel of us and I feel we can do a lot better.
“It’s the second home game in a row where we haven’t performed and that’s a huge frustration for us. That’s two back-to-back games where we have been nowhere near ourselves.
“We just have to hold our hands up and say we didn’t perform.
“Athletically, we weren’t ourselves and all these things contribute to a disappointing day.
“I thought that on the ball, we were wasteful.
“I don’t think it was anywhere near our best technical level.
“You put that together, you know, that’s not the recipe for a great performance.
“We probably deserved to lose the game.
“I think there are similarities in the two home games we have just had, though I don’t think we were as bad here against Fulham as we were against Bournemouth, we had our moments.
“At 1-1, I thought it was our best period of the game.
“If we score then, the game is very different. But we didn’t, of course.
“It’s hugely frustrating because I know how much better we are than that performance.
“We just looked a little flat for whatever reason.
“I was really confident we would perform well [against Fulham and it really hurts that we didn’t.
“We have to recover quickly because there’s a game around the corner, a massive game in our season. We need to make sure we get ready for Wednesday night.”
Eddie Howe on whether home form is a concern with Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal coming up:
“I think the whole atmosphere and feeling will be very different on Wednesday night.
“It is another reminder though that we need to be near our best to win games.
“It is another example of the quality of Premier League teams.”
