Which then allowed Manchester City to take advantage.

The reigning champions stepping in to sign Abdukhodir Khusanov for around £34m, plus future potential add-ons.

The highly regarded 20 year old a player that both Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell were keen to bring in.

Eddie Howe confirming this morning, what Gairat Khasbiullin had said on Thursday. Gairat Khasbiullin the agent of Abdukhodir Khusanov and he’d stated that Newcastle United had the player lined up to sign.

“Eddie Howe confirmed this morning that Newcastle had done all the preparation to sign Abdukhodir Khusanov this month but were simply unable to move because of PSR situation.

“Man City swooped in and got him instead.

“Newcastle would have liked to sign him in the summer. Paul Mitchell a big fan of the centre back.

“Unless there is a late twist, Newcastle will not be signing anyone this month.”

This follows on from the agent of Abdukhodir Khusanov, Gairat Khasbiullin, stating Newcastle United were “very close’ to a deal for the Uzbekistan international prior to his move to Manchester City.

Khusanov has signed for Manchester City from RC Lens for a fee of around £34 million pounds, having been linked with Newcastle United earlier in the January transfer window.

A fast and aggressive centre back and only 20 years of age, he sounded to many Newcastle fans like a perfect fit for our physical style of play.

Khasbiullin said Newcastle had “remained one of the favourites” for Khazanov’s signature and that we were “the last to leave the race with Man City.”

Manchester City are certainly the most active Premier League club in the transfer window, having a lot of PSR flex, due to their massive revenues and relatively limited spending for them in recent windows.

Khasbiullin was also quoted as saying that PSR limits were a major hindrance to Newcastle United in their quest to sign the young defender.

Which has now obviously been confirmed by Eddie Howe, via the Luke Edwards reporting.

Many fans have questioned how Newcastle United find themselves so heavily limited by PSR, despite the widespread media claims of United prepared to pay far bigger money for Marc Guehi last summer, compared to this initial £34m that Man City have paid for Abdukhodir Khusanov.
