I noticed the other day that Eddie Howe had made it to 100 Newcastle United matches in the Premier League.

The 4-1 at Burnley bringing up the century.

I then made a fatal mistake.

I relied on something I read online (no offence to The Mag!!!).

I started doing some analysis on Eddie Howe and these 100 Premier League matches with Newcastle United then had a nightmare.

As I just couldn’t get things to add up.

Then I realised…

Everything was out of line because my starting point for Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United Premier League games was:

Played 100 Won 49 Drawn 25 Lost 26

Only problem was/is that this is wrong!

It is actually…

Played 100 Won 49 Drawn 24 Lost 27

A small error from whoever this online expert is, BUT a killer one when you are trying to get things to add up, anyway…

I hope this provides a bit of interest, what I found out when looking at Eddie Howe and his 100 Newcastle United Premier League matches AND indeed, his 122 NUFC games in total.

Eddie Howe 100 Premier League matches with Newcastle United (as at 9 May 2024)

Played 100 Won 49 Drawn 24 Lost 27

These are the clubs that Eddie Howe’s NUFC have lost to in the Premier League:

6 Liverpool

5 Man City

3 Arsenal

2 Everton, Chelsea, Tottenham

1 Brighton, Bournemouth, Luton, Forest, Palace, Villa, Leicester

Obviously the most annoying thing, at least for me, is that Klopp and the scousers have some kind of a curse on us.

Having said that though, I think it is a real stand out that in two and a half years, more than 50% of Eddie Howe’s Premier League defeats have been to the three best other teams overall in this time period. It is 14 defeats to that trio and only 13 to the rest.

Indeed, whilst Eddie Howe has lost 14 of 18 Premier League matches to those three best Premier League teams, remarkably, he has only lost 13 of the other 82 PL games NUFC have played under him.

Against all of the other clubs (apart from Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal), it is:

Played 82 Won 47 Drawn 22 Lost 13 (losing only 15 % of these 82 against the other clubs)

Eddie Howe 122 matches (all competitions) with Newcastle United (as at 9 May 2024)

Played 122 Won 61 Drawn 26 Lost 35

These are the clubs that Eddie Howe’s NUFC have lost to in all competitions:

6 Liverpool, Man City

3 Arsenal, Chelsea

2 Everton, Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund

1 Brighton, Bournemouth, Luton, Forest, Palace, Villa, Leicester, Cambridge, Sheffield Wednesday, AC Milan, Man U

So when you add in domestic cups and Champions League, Eddie Howe has won a very impressive 61 of 122 games, exactly 50%. Whilst losing only 28% of them.

If you take out the 19 matches against Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool, you then get:

Played 103 Won 59 Drawn 24 Lost 20

So against all of the other clubs (excepting Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City), Eddie Howe winning 57% and losing just 19%.
