Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is poised to leave the club this summer.

The Athletic reports that Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are interested in the talented midfielder, but a deal is difficult at this stage.

Dortmund want to bring Chukwuemeka back to Signal Iduna Park on a second loan deal, having gotten a glimpse of his immense potential.

However, Chelsea aren’t willing to give the Germans a chance to get a second look at the midfielder. The Blues have made it clear that they would only part ways with Chukwuemeka on a permanent deal.

The 21-year-old has endured a tough spell since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa in the summer of 2022.

He was starting to make inroads into the starting line-up in 2023/24, but an unfortunate knee injury stopped him in his tracks, and he has since been on the fringes.

Chukwuemeka spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund. He featured 17 times across all competitions, but his only goal came in a 4-1 win against SC Freiburg towards the end of the season.

Despite his modest tally, the young Englishman left a lasting impression on the Dortmund hierarchy, although not enough to sanction a permanent deal.

Dortmund want to take him on a second loan. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said as much after his side’s 3-2 quarter-final defeat against Real Madrid that sent them packing from the Club World Cup.

But Chelsea are adamant that only proposals of an outright sale will bring them to the negotiating table.

The Blues were recently slammed with a fine for breaching UEFA’s financial rules.

They were told to pay £26.7m and will not be allowed to register eligible players in the Champions League unless they sort out their books with player sales.

Chukwuemeka is one of many names on the chopping block. The player is valued at £15m on Transfermarkt, but Chelsea could demand more.
