Gianluigi Donnarumma’s agent Enzo Raiola claims Paris Saint-Germain ‘changed the agreement’ over a new contract, but with Italian clubs unwilling to spend, the Premier League is ‘the right step.’
The goalkeeper has been unceremoniously pushed out the door this summer, just weeks after proving instrumental in their Champions League success, and days after being nominated for both the Yachine Award and the Ballon d’Or.
It is because his contract is due to expire in June 2026 and no agreement has been reached over a new deal, though agent Raiola insists Donnarumma had been prepared to take a pay cut.

“After the summer vacation, I met director Campos and reminded him for the last time that Gigio still had a year left on his contract, which he wanted to respect all the way to the end,” Raiola told Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube Channel.
“Then towards August 7, Campos confirmed the coach had taken this decision to not call Gigio anymore, cutting him out of training sessions and the first team. He just said it was not a decision wanted by the club, but by the coach.
“Until a month ago we were talking about a new contract, so I don’t think the coach alone made this decision during the vacation, especially after all Gigio did. The decision is senseless and with hindsight it was made because they are scared of keeping a goalkeeper like Gigio near to someone inexperienced (Lucas Chevalier, ndr) who might suffer that pressure and be damaged by his presence.
“Even that isn’t particularly convincing, because when Gigio arrived, he had to fight it out with a great goalkeeper like Keylor Navas. He did the same at age 16 at Milan. This is really a lack of faith in the new goalkeeper they signed.”

Donnarumma had been earning a huge €12m per season salary at Paris Saint-Germain, with reports the club tried to cut it significantly, moving to a formula where much of it was performance-related based on the number of games played.
Raiola assures that the Italy international had been prepared to make a sacrifice for the club that he had joined when leaving Milan as a free agent in 2021.
“The team was having incredible results, so it seemed disrespectful for us to create any problems for the club in the media. We never even got the chance to make a request. I had dropped hints a year ago, but they never got my signals,” said the agent.
“They had made promises based on the conditions we could accept or not. But then as time went on, they just wanted to say this was the maximum they could do because of their financial situation. Gigio understood this could penalise the club, so he made a gesture to get closer to their position.
“Despite that, when the documentation arrived, we saw different conditions to the ones we had initially agreed to. I said we would stop there and resume talks after the Champions League Final, but it went the way it went. We never got the opportunity to make a request.”

Now that his time at PSG seems to be over, Donnarumma is likely to move to the Premier League, despite interest from Juventus and Inter over the years.
“It’s not just a financial issue, but in Italy the big clubs aren’t going through the best economic situation. It’s true, the Premier League is very intriguing to us. I saw that many of my clients who play in the Premier League think it is the best step, being the most competitive league in the world.
“As of today, I have not received even the slightest hint from Italy that clubs could start negotiations for Gigio in this window. I won’t exclude anything for the future, but so far no Italian clubs have stepped forward.
“On a purely financial level, nobody has the means to take a step towards Donnarumma,” concluded Raiola.

This is very similar to the version of events Raiola gave to Sky Sport Italia last night, claiming that Paris Saint-Germain changed the agreement on their new contract proposal and were “disrespectful” towards the Italy international.
“We spoke before the Club World Cup and they confirmed their intention to keep going forward together. We really did not expect what happened over the last 10 days.
“I understand they want to sign a new goalkeeper, but cutting Gigio out of the squad after all he did was such a terrible show of disrespect that I might even evaluate legal action.”
