In a moving display of remembrance, Portuguese club Gondomar have unveiled their 2025/26 shirt design, featuring the faces of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who both tragically lost their lives in a car crash on July 3.
Jota, a beloved figure at Liverpool and a proud son of Gondomar, played for the local side during his youth days alongside Andre. Their untimely passing sent shockwaves through the footballing world and especially through the communities they called home.
Now, Gondomar are preserving their legacy in a powerful way. The new kits will display the brothers’ faces on the front, with their names beneath an infinity symbol on the back, symbolising eternal remembrance.
Announcing the gesture on Instagram, Gondomar shared the emotional reason behind the kit:
“More than a jersey, an eternal tribute. This season, Gondomar Sport Club enters the field with a heart full of memories and feelings. Our new jersey incorporates the image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon, but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football.Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it’s like stepping on the field with them.Because football is more than victories and goals, it’s legacy, it’s family, it’s love for our land.”
For the people of Gondomar, this shirt is a proud statement of identity. For Liverpool supporters, it’s a beautiful extension of the grief and admiration felt in the aftermath of Jota’s passing.
In Merseyside, the tributes have poured in relentlessly. Liverpool’s players wore shirts bearing Jota’s name during pre-season clashes against AC Milan and Yokohama FM. That gesture will continue throughout the campaign as the club competes under the leadership of Arne Slot, who guided the Reds to the Premier League title in 2024/25.
Outside Anfield, a mural by Liverpool artist Paul Curtis has become a site of remembrance. Former midfielder James Milner, now at Brighton, has changed his squad number to 20 in honour of his former teammate.
Jota’s impact extended far beyond Liverpool. Wolves, where he made a name for himself before his move to Anfield, will honour him on the Premier League’s opening weekend and have added him to their hall of fame.
In Portugal, Porto’s friendly against Atletico Madrid will serve as a dedication to Jota’s memory, marking his connection to both clubs during his career.
These tributes reflect a player who gave everything to the game and whose story, rooted in Gondomar and reaching its peak at Liverpool, has touched fans across continents.
