De Vrij had a tough task in yesterday’s match at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Dutchman will certainly have been ready to play. But he will have expected that he could come on in the second half, and not midway through the first.

Therefore, de Vrij had to warm up very quickly.

The 32-year-old had to take the place of Francesco Acerbi at the heart of Inter’s defense after the Italian international suffered a thigh problem.

And coming up to the pace of the match was never going to be an easy task.

Roma had given Inter a real physical battle. And striker Artem Dovbyk was certainly was looking to act as his team’s reference point in attack.

In the first half hour or so, Acerbi had just about kept the very physical Dovbyk from getting into the game and providing the holdup play that Roma were looking for.

But the Ukrainian international will have relished the sight of de Vrij coming on with little warm-up.

There were a couple of moments not long after the Dutchman came on where Dovbyk was able to outmuscle him to keep possession.

But it didn’t take long for de Vrij to settle into the match.

And once he did, the former Lazio and Feyenoord defender decisively got the better of his battle with Dovbyk.

The former Girona striker hardly got a kick, as de Vrij was first to every ball.

De Vrij showed all his experience and physicality to defend the penalty area as Inter held out for the win and their third Serie A clean sheet of the season.
