Villarreal CF put up a fight, but it wasn’t enough to earn a point against Real Madrid, who won 1-2 at the Estadio de la Cerámica by being more clinical in front of goal. Ancelotti’s side fought back from Juan Foyth’s early goal with a double from Mbappé in just six minutes. The Yellows, although they tried, were unsuccessful and were unable to get back on level terms.
Marcelino made two changes from the last game against Deportivo Alavés (1-0), from which the Yellows failed to get anything. Santi Comesaña and Tajon Buchanan came in for Dani Parejo and Yeremy Pino.
The match had all the makings of a great game. The Submarine struck first, taking an early lead. In the seventh minute, Juan Foyth made it 1-0 when he sent home a loose ball in the box after a fantastic corner kick by Álex Baena.
Real Madrid were quick to hit back, pulling one back after just a quarter of an hour and two chances. Mbappé was the scorer of both goals. The first, after Diego Conde’s clearance from a Brahim shot, and the second, a right-footed reply to a fortuitous pass from Lucas Vázquez. With very little time on the clock, Real Madrid took the lead.
Through direct play, the Yellows looked to get back on level terms, but were unable to find the right finishing touch. A cross-shot from Nicolas Pepe, which was blocked by Courtois, after a ball into space from Comesaña, was the best chance for the Submarine in the final stretch of the first half. The game went to the break with the score at 1-2.
At the start of the second half, Villarreal took a step forward in search of an equaliser. Thierno Barry came on to replace Nicolas Pepe. The French striker had the first chance of the second 45 minutes with his head. He headed high from Álex Baena’s inviting cross from the right flank.
It was a good few minutes for Marcelino’s side, who again came close to making it 2-2 through Juan Foyth after a corner kick. The Argentinian was unable to get proper shot away on the volley after a ball into the box from Baena.
In the 60th minute, Gil Manzano spared Bellingham a red card after a clear act of aggression towards Juan Foyth, whose face he pushed away with his hand when play was stopped, after a fight for the ball between the two.
As the minutes ticked by, the game opened up. The Submarine went on the attack in search of a second and the away side were quick to counter-attack, led by Vinicius, who had only recently entered the field. In the 83rd minute, Ayoze came close to scoring with a shot from close range after a reverse pass inside the area. The striker, who had cleverly poached the ball after Baena’s shot, sent the ball just over.
Despite their efforts and attempts in the closing stages, Marcelino’s side were unable to find the net and eventually fell to an opponent who were more clinical in front of goal to take all three points.
