AC Milan secured their spot in the final four of the Coppa Italia by beating Roma 3-1 at San Siro last night in what was an entertaining contest.

Milan were 2-0 up at the break as Tammy Abraham netted a brace against his parent club. The first came from a brilliant header and the second was a one-on-one chance he finished well, with both assists from Theo Hernandez.

Artem Dovbyk did score early in the second half off the bench to reduce the deficit, but then January additions Santiago Gimenez and Joao Felix linked up after coming on – the former setting up the latter – to restore the two-goal lead.

Rough with the smooth

The 3-1 scoreline may make it seem as though Milan had quite a comfortable evening, though the stats show that Roma came and gave it a real go as they were expected to having regained some confidence under Claudio Ranieri.

Milan edged possession very slightly and had a higher Expected Goals figure, but the big chances were equal at three each. Roma had more total shots, shots on target and corners.

In truth, it was the Rossoneri’s clinical edge – something rarely said this season – that allowed them to score during the key phases of the game. Scoring three times from an xG of 2.03 is a welcome surprise.

Building a streak

Milan (25) is one of the three teams to have reached the Coppa Italia semi-finals at least 25 times, alongside Juventus (36) and Inter (29).

Not only that, but the Diavolo have remained unbeaten for 11 consecutive home games in a single season for the first time since 2012/13 (13, with Massimiliano Allegri as coach).

While there is a still a lot of work to do to polish the performances, Sergio Conceicao has at least come in and built on the idea of San Siro being a fortress and continues to enjoy domestic cups.

Tammy, Theo and signings steal the show

Tammy Abraham is the third player to score for both Roma and Milan in the Coppa Italia in the last 20 seasons (since 2005/06), after Marco Borriello and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Before Abraham, the last Milan player to score a brace against Roma in all competitions was Zlatan Ibrahimović (on 26 October 2020 in Serie A).

More Stories / The Match

No Serie A defender has contributed to more goals than Theo Hernández (nine, like Denzel Dumfries and Nuno Tavares) this season in all competitions: four goals and five assists for the Frenchman.

Theo is the only Serie A defender to have scored at least four goals and provided at least four assists this season in all competitions.

Before João Félix and Santiago Giménez, the last two players to contribute to a goal on their debut for AC Milan in a single match were Christian Pulisic and Tijjani Reijnders on 21 August 2023 (vs Bologna in Serie A).

João Félix is the first AC Milan player to score on debut since Álvaro Morata last August (vs Torino in Serie A).
