Newcastle United are entering a pivotal phase in negotiations with Congolese striker Yoane Wissa, arriving from Brentford, to strengthen their attacking line ahead of the summer transfer window deadline.Renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the two clubs have reached a verbal agreement for a transfer worth £55 million (63.5 million euros), with the player set to undergo his medical in the coming hours before officially signing his contract.Wissa’s deal with Newcastle is expected to run for four seasons, making him a key addition to the squad. The player’s current contract with the "Bees" runs until the end of June 2026, but he has already expressed his desire to leave this summer. He confirmed on his official Instagram account his intention to join Newcastle United, after his name recently started circulating around the English club.
The Congolese international’s lengthy statement reads as follows:
I have remained silent for most of the summer, but with just hours left in the transfer window, I feel compelled to state clearly that I want to leave Brentford. I believe the club is unfairly standing in my way, despite several reasonable offers received throughout the summer. (…) Earlier this summer, I had open discussions with the club’s management, including some directors and the new coach. I made my intention to seek a new challenge absolutely clear."During these talks, it was confirmed to me and my representatives that the club would not hold me back if a reasonable offer was made. This was also confirmed in writing. Based on this commitment, I began looking for a new club, keeping Brentford fully informed at every step. I received a formal offer from another Premier League club and communicated my desire to join them." "From all my discussions with Brentford, I believed there was a mutual agreement to part ways. However, as the transfer window draws to a close, the club suddenly changed its stance, contradicting what was previously agreed. This has put me in a difficult and frustrating position." "The promise to let me leave this summer has not been kept. It pains me to have to write this, and yet I continue to deeply respect the club and its supporters."
