Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has vowed to “never give up” in response to the criticism he has received following his miss in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

With just over 20 minutes to play at Villa Park and the score locked at 2-2, Nunez had a glorious chance to put Liverpool ahead.

Dominik Szoboszlai was put through on goal and with just Emiliano Martinez to beat, he opted to square the ball to Nunez for what appeared to be a simple tap-in.

However, the Uruguay international somehow failed to convert the chance despite being about seven yards out at the back post.

As expected, the miss - which denied Liverpool the chance to open up a 10-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League - drew plenty of criticism from supporters and pundits alike.

Reds manager Arne Slot has even revealed he plans to hold talks with Nunez after revealing his unhappiness at the forward’s behaviour and work rate in response to the spurned opportunity.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old insists he will bounce back and give his all for as long as he is a Liverpool player.

Taking to social media less than 24 hours after the result at Villa Park, a translation of his post on X reads: “I wasn't the best three weeks ago, and I'm not the worst now. If I fall, I get up. You'll never see me give up.

“I'm going to give it my all until the last day I'm here in Liverpool. Resilience!”

Slot revealed that Nunez was “quite down” in the dressing room afterwards but insisted his striker was “very unlucky” to miss such a big chance.

“What I saw was an unbelievable pass from Conor Bradley and what a power run from Dominik Szoboszlai, who made, in my opinion, the perfect choice to square it [as] from a one-v-one to the goalkeeper he made it an open-goal chance,” Slot said.

“Then Darwin, of course, it was not the best leg [because] he is right-footed, of course, but it was still a big chance.

“Yeah, very unlucky and I was hoping that he could have got another one because a player like him probably wouldn’t miss two chances in a row and he was very close afterwards when he went towards Martinez again, but Martinez made a great sliding tackle to win the ball.

“I think we are all disappointed but it is normal that a player that missed a chance like this is always a bit more disappointed than the rest.”
