Dani Olmo will be sidelined for the next four to five weeks after picking up a hamstring injury in Barcelona's 4-1 win over Girona on Sunday, the club have confirmed.

The midfielder earned himself a place on the scoresheet after providing Barca's third goal of the game by slotting in a well-timed pass from Jules Kounde just after half-time. He came off the pitch around the hour mark, making way for Eric Garcia.

Unfortunately, it seems Olmo's substitution was more serious than it first appeared, with the club confirming he will miss up to five weeks after damaging his hamstring.

The news comes as a huge blow for the Catalan giants, who are set to play their Champions League season-opener against Monaco on Thursday.

Olmo made the move to Barca this summer after leaving RB Leipzig and wasted little time in becoming an integral part of Hansi Flick's side. The 26-year-old has bagged three goals in his first three league games - becoming the first new player to do so since Cesc Fabregas in 2011.

He was tipped to be a vital part of Flick's Champions League after featuring in the tournament last year for Leipzig, but fans will have to wait for his first taste of action on the international stage for his new club.

Barca remain unbeaten so far in the league, recording wins over Real Valladolid, Rayo Vallecano, Athletic Club and Valencia to sit them atop the table, four points clear of rivals and title-holders Real Madrid.

Their next league game is set to come on Saturday with a visit to Villarreal.
