Crystal Palace are interested in Southampton’s Tyler Dibling as the Eagles look to bring reinforcement to Selhurst Park before the transfer window closes (Alex Crook).
Palace have only signed Borna Sosa and Walter Benitez this summer, leaving manager Oliver Glasner short-staffed for the season ahead.
The Eagles are now looking at Dibling, who is not short of suitors across the Premier League, but he is there for the taking if the South London club wants him.
Dibling can operate in one of the two attacking midfield positions in Glasner’s 3-4-2-1 formation, right behind Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Palace would have to cough up north of £45 million to sign him after Southampton rejected a bid of that amount from Everton weeks ago.
It remains unclear whether the Eagles are ready to step up with an offer.
Tyler has been praised as one of the brightest young talents in England.
Despite showing only glimpses of his ability at the senior level, several big clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur glanced his way.
Former Southampton and current Rangers boss Russell Martin believes he is a “really special talent”.
However, spending so much on the England youth international might not be the wisest course of action.
Palace are on the verge of losing Eberechi Eze, with Tottenham close to finalising a deal for his signature, and the Eagles should maximise the windfall.
Banking just over £60 million for Eze, the South London outfit should be able to split that money to sign two proper attackers to bolster the frontline.
Palace have been linked with moves for Christos Tzolis and Bilal El Khannouss. That would be a better use of the funds than spending almost all of it trying to sign Dibling.
The next few days will show how bold the Eagles are willing to be in the transfer window.
