It has been claimed by Football Insider that the Premier League side are now in a strong place to finalise a move to take the 26-year-old from Sporting CP to Old Trafford.

Gyokeres moved to the Portuguese side in 2023 from Championship outfit Coventry City for a fee believed to have been worth around £20million to the club so far.

The Sweden international has moved into another gear since the move, attracting Premier League interest on multiple fronts. Thankfully, the Sky Blues were wise enough to include a sell-on clause.

As part of the sale to Sporting, the Sky Blues included a sell-on clause originally worth 15 per cent of any profit made on the subsequent sale of Gyokeres.

That has since been reduced to 10 per cent after the Liga Portugal side paid an additional £843,500 in performance-related bonuses.

It means the Sky Blues will be watching this summer’s negotiations with a keen eye to learn how much more they could bring in from another sale.

With the giants of United and Arsenal battling it out, the final price could mean a huge windfall for Frank Lampard’s side.

How much Coventry could earn with United and Arsenal battling for Gyokeres

Football Insider are reporting that the Manchester club have moved ahead of Mikel Arteta’s men in the race for Gyokeres, due partly to the existing relationship between Reds boss Ruben Amorim and the striker from their shared time at Sporting.

The same outlet has reported that his official release clause is as high as £85m, but signals suggest that the Portuguese outfit would let him go for around £60million.

The precise figures will be slightly different, but on the presumption that Sporting paid £20m originally, and they sell for £60m, that will create a £40m profit and, with their 10 per cent clause, Coventry will be due £4m of that.

In any regular transfer window, a sale worth that sort of money would be a significant boost to the budget, so to get it for a player they’ve already moved on from would be huge news for Coventry.

However, Coventry owner Doug King has revealed his side won’t get to keep all that, with a significant part of it flowing back to Brighton & Hove Albion – who the Sky Blues purchased Gyokeres from originally – in development fees.

Gyokeres has been an incredible deal for Coventry

Still, Coventry can be happy with their work on Gyokeres.

They managed to pick him up from the Seagulls for just £1m, an incredible bargain in hindsight given the player he’s become.

He went to provide 43 goals and 17 assists in 116 appearances for Coventry, brought £20m into the club and still now, years later, could be about to boost the coffers again.
