Could Manchester City hit the market to replace a departing left-back?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this week that Real Sociedad had agreed a deal to sign Sergio Gomez. While the Spanish youth international was more of a bit player for Manchester City he was still a member of City’s first-team squad. With that in mind will the champions look at replacing the soon-to-be departing Sergio Gomez?

As it stands currently Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake are typically preferred at left-back by Pep Guardiola. In the case of Gvardiol, he developed into one of the finest left-backs in the Premier League during his first season at the club. With Gvardiol and Ake preferred at left-back to Sergio Gomez it meant that Gomez spent the majority of last season on the periphery of City’s first-team. But he was still a member of the Manchester City first-team. With Gomez appearing set to depart the champions will they look to replace him?

Manchester City will need a strong squad for next season.

It remains to be seen if Manchester City will sign another left-back. As previously mentioned Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake share the left-back duties for the champions. But they could need another left-back for next season. This summer has seen the Copa America and Euro 24 take centre stage. The champions have had a host of players involved at both tournaments. This coupled with a bigger fixture list for City next season means they should replace Gomez this summer.

Who that could be remains to be seen. With Josko Gvardiol having established himself at left-back the champions may bring a player who can for develop at left-back while giving rest to Gvardiol and Ake when required. A report from SempreMilan suggests that City were set to battle Real Madrid to sign AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez. But that move appears unlikely. A young player who will settle for a squad role for City seems a far more likely move.

With Sergio Gomez set to depart Manchester City for Real Sociedad as per Fabrizio Romano’s report what City do next is now a story to watch for. It is unlikely that they won’t replace Gomez in their squad. It just remains to be seen who that player could potentially be going forward.
