With Kevin De Bruyne’s departure and Mateo Kovacic’s latest injury, Man City face an urgent need to refresh their midfield options. Their failure to secure Florian Wirtz has only intensified their focus, and the move for Rayan Cherki now appears both logical and timely, reports Ornstein from The Athletic.
Cherki is a rare talent. Comfortable off either foot, the France Under-21 international can operate both wide and centrally. “Cherki is a technically gifted player who is comfortable shooting, passing and dribbling with both feet and can play out wide or in midfield.” His dribbling enables him to unlock defences under pressure, offering City an unpredictable and fluid attacking option.

Pep Guardiola has increasingly relied on ball-carriers such as Kovacic, Jeremy Doku, Savinho and Omar Marmoush to break down deep blocks. Cherki suits this evolution. “Cherki fits well into that scheme and adds an extra layer with his passing. He can both dictate tempo with controlled passes and create chances with more daring attempts.”
Pressing remains a weaker area. “Defensively, Cherki is not the most intense presser. He does recognise triggers, though, and Pep Guardiola will be expected to get the best out of him in this regard, too.” With coaching, City could shape him into a rounded asset for seasons to come.
