Chelsea fans have all sorts of wants and desires for the squad this summer. The first priority is a new manager, of course. But once that’s done, it’s down to deciding what to spend, and where.

The squad is in a funny shape in places. There are some areas of the pitch where it’s still not clear whether we’re sorted for the future, or desperately in need of reinforcements. Take left back for example. If Ben Chilwell is fit and flying next season, with Marc Cucurella ready to back him up, and Levi Colwill ready to fill in as third choice, we’re good to go. No need to spend our previous resources there.

On the other hand, if Chilwell has another injured season and Cucurella struggles, we will rue not spending there.

It’s the same story at centre back – if Wesley Fofana is fit and Benoit Badiashile is back to his best, with Trevoh Chalobah looking great and Axel Disasi a capable fourth choice, we’re golden. But can any of those things be relied upon?

The questions continue

Up front, Nicolas Jackson looks like he really could be the future. If he polishes up his game a little he could truly be a top class striker. But are we willing to go into next season gambling on him continuing to improve? It’s a big risk. We can’t rely on Cole Palmer carrying the team’s goal supply a second year in a row.

As for midfield, the mysteries there are even deeper. Can Enzo and Moises Caicedo play together? Will Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu returning mean we’re sorted there? Or are we going to have to go back into the market?

There are a huge number of questions to answer, and a coach needs to be put in place immediately to start answering them.
