The meeting in Rome between Giorgio Furlani and Igli Tare was a positive one, but the matter of AC Milan’s new sporting director is far from closed.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Furlani had already had telephone discussions with Tare, but in the capital there was the first proper face-to-face meeting. It lasted about four hours and the project to revive the Rossoneri was discussed at length.

For the former Lazio director, it was not his first meeting with Milan. His name had already been endorsed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a summit in London almost two months ago, together with the owner of RedBird Capital Gerry Cardinale.

However, the Rome meeting with Furlani was not decisive. There were no handshakes and it is possible that other talks will take place in the coming days to try to resolve some doubts. Furlani also does not want to rush things because he is aware how big a decision this is.

This is why all aspects will have to be evaluated, from the financial one to responsibilities, from the ideas for the summer mercato to the chosen coach. Tare is one of the main candidates, especially because he is free to sign immediately, but the fact he hasn’t means evaluations are ongoing.

Work to do

The next sporting director of Milan will also have to be present at Milanello, in the relationship with players and coach, acting as a glue between the team and the club, a bit of what the Diavolo have lacked in these two years after the farewell of the Maldini-Massara duo.

It is at the training complex that internal problems are resolved and this year has shown that not even the presence of Ibrahimovic has been useful in containing some moments of crisis. The future director will have to know how to adapt to the management structure, where decisions are shared.

A ‘traditional’ sporting director will arrive, as admitted by Furlani himself in a recent interview, but he will not be all-powerful. Thus, he will still have to act in collaboration with the CEO, Ibrahimovic, Geoffrey Moncada and of course the owners.

Alternatives to Tare

Tare is certainly among the names examined by Furlani, but he is not the only one. It is likely that the CEO will continue the search with further interviews with other candidates.

In recent days, Milan have also thought about Giovanni Sartori, but Bologna do not want to lose him, and he recently renewed until 2027. Some enquiries have been made for Giovanni Manna from Napoli, but the response was negative.

Then the name of Tony D’Amico from Atalanta could come back into fashion, also under contract until 2027 but among Furlani’s favourites. There are also intermediaries who are proposing names from abroad, including Devin Ozek from Germany, formerly of Bayer Leverkusen.
