It has been a chaotic last 48 hours at AC Milan, given the change in head coach from Paulo Fonseca to Sergio Conceicao after the Roma game.

This morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) has an article inside it which takes aim at the Milan leadership, titled: ‘Milan, what a mess: the long list of mistakes made. And Fonseca didn’t deserve such a farewell’.

The change of coach testifies to the ‘terrible confusion’ that there is inside the Rossoneri at the moment. There have been too many mistake, starting with sending Fonseca out for a press conference following the 1-1 draw with Roma, unaware he was about to be sacked.

It is also unacceptable that a club like Milan should allow an agent – Jorge Mendes – to dictate the timing of the announcement of the new coach. Just before the match against the Giallorossi, Mendes thought it was best to leak the news about an agreement with Conceicao.

It was a pressure tactic from the agent: he knew that if Fonseca were to pull out a win in the final game of 2024 then the Milan management might just put off sacking him until into the new year, a scenario he was keen to avoid.

More Stories / The Match

The most glaring mistake was certainly the decision in the summer to hire Fonseca in the first place when the fans were asking for other coaches (Antonio Conte first and foremost), and then not defend him to the end.

Milan lack a figure under the CEO who knows football inside out but also has a degree of authority, who is able to show up at a press conference when the situation becomes critical and who knows how to talk to the players.

This season is now compromised, but it remains mandatory to get to the Champions League not only for sporting reasons, but also economic ones. Then there are also two trophies to try to win: the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana, the latter of which is just around the corner.
