For AC Milan, tonight’s semi-final second leg against Inter really is a ‘final call’ for the season, given the Coppa Italia is the only route into Europe.

As Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) reports this morning, the overall judgment on the season would not change much because the expectations were very different, but going to the final of the Coppa Italia and winning it would add a sweet end to a bitter campaign.

It would be a sort of consolation prize given that the primary objective was to qualify for the Champions League, but a Europa League spot – which comes with winning the cup – would be better than nothing. For this reason, tonight’s match is truly the most important of the season.

Win at all costs

Milan must try to save at least part of this disappointing season and to do so they must win the Coppa Italia at all costs, which would also allow them to snatch the pass for the next Europa League as mentioned.

The opponents will be Inter, and they will resume after the 1-1 of the first leg three weeks ago. After the years with Stefano Pioli in which the derby was a real taboo, in the four derbies that have already been played this season produced two wins for Milan and two draws.

More Stories / The Match

Sergio Conceicao spoke on the eve of the game in his press conference: “I expect the best Milan, the match is very important, the big clubs try to get to the end of the competitions. For us it must be normal to reach the final. We must understand that every match is different. And believe in it. It will all depend on what we do.”

The coach is obviously well aware how important tonight’s match is, even if his fate is already sealed. He could lift another trophy after the Supercoppa Italiana – also coming via victory against Inter – and then say goodbye.

The system remains

The Rossoneri coach should use – for the third game in a row – the three-man defence that did well against Udinese and a little less well against Atalanta three days ago.

The men who will take the field from the first minute will also be the same as in the last two matches, with only one new addition up front where Tammy Abraham will lead the attack in place of Luka Jovic.

Tonight they need to win for glory and also for money because eventually going to the Europa League would allow Milan to contain the losses for the failure to qualify for the Champions League.
