Ibrahima Konate’s future has become one of the most closely watched stories of Liverpool’s summer. The French international, now 26, has entered the final year of his contract and has yet to reach an agreement on an extension. Reports from Sempre Barca suggest Barcelona have already moved into the picture, holding exploratory conversations with his representatives as uncertainty over his future deepens.
Sempre Barca stated, “As per our sources, the Catalan giants have even held preliminary talks with the player’s inner circle.” They added, “Moreover, during these talks and discussions, it was revealed that Konate would not be opposed to the idea of becoming a part of the Barça project.”

Barcelona’s interest comes at a time of defensive strain, following Íñigo Martínez’s departure earlier this summer. Financial constraints mean their approach is strategic, targeting players nearing the end of contracts or potentially available for modest fees. Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation, creating an El Clasico rivalry over a defender whose value is unlikely to stay low.
Despite external attention, Konate’s immediate focus appears clear. As Sempre Barca reported, “However, at least for now, his priority is to settle his current situation with Liverpool. He wants to understand his role and importance at the club, and if the English side is willing to give him the contract that could convince him to stay in the Premier League.”
Liverpool are aware of the risks involved. Having seen high-profile contract sagas disrupt the squad in the past, they want swift clarity. DaveOCKOP also noted that “Liverpool is trying to extend his deal before the summer transfer window closes. The Reds want Konaté to make up his mind before the transfer window closes.”
Konate is seeking recognition of his value, with current terms worth around £70,000 per week. Sempre Barca highlighted that he is “aiming for a significantly higher wage, seeking a new deal in the region of £200,000 per week.”

That demand has caused tension. “Konate has been disappointed by Liverpool’s initial contract offers, with his representatives pushing for a greater guaranteed base salary rather than a structure heavily reliant on performance-related incentives and bonuses.”
The club face a difficult decision. Unless fresh terms are agreed, they may entertain bids in excess of £35 million this summer, rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2026.
Konate remains central to Arne Slot’s defensive structure, and any sale would represent a major disruption. Yet Liverpool must decide whether to stretch their wage bill or move on a player admired by both Barcelona and Real Madrid. The next few weeks will define whether Konate’s long-term future lies at Anfield or away from it.
Konate has long been seen as the heir to Virgil van Dijk, a defender who combines athleticism with composure. To lose him, particularly at a time when the squad is bedding into Arne Slot’s methods, would be a blow.
Fans will understand the club’s caution on wages. £200,000 per week is a significant step up, particularly for a player whose injury record has raised questions in recent seasons. However, there is also a recognition that letting another top talent run down a contract could be damaging. The painful drawn-out sagas of recent years have left supporters craving decisiveness.
Barcelona and Real Madrid circling only heightens the tension. While some will argue Liverpool cannot be held hostage in negotiations, most fans would rather see Konate tied down than watch him depart for Spain at a cut price.
For many, the hope is that a balance can be struck. A fair deal that rewards Konate’s importance while safeguarding the club’s financial strategy would keep a core defender at Anfield during a new era. Anything less may leave Liverpool fans fearing another key departure at the worst possible moment.
