Some interesting news has emerged regarding Stefano Pioli’s contract situation with AC Milan, and it has been confirmed that the club are still paying him.

Calciomercato.com speaks of ‘tense’ hours at Milan following the draw against Lazio which not only continued the winless start to the season but also showed that the team have not resolved the problems already highlighted in the first two games.

While Paulo Fonseca’s position ends up in the crosshairs of criticism, a detail emerges: Pioli is still under contract with the Rossoneri. The two are not connected, because Fonseca is not at immediate risk and will only be further evaluated after the games against Venezia, Liverpool and Inter.

On May 24, Milan and Pioli officially said goodbye, with the Rossoneri making the announcement on their channels. The supporters got to bid farewell after the last match of the season against Salernitana a few days later.

It was a parting that took place a year ahead of the natural expiry of the contract (June 2025), but it was not entirely formalised. It was not a sacking: instead the parties agreed that the working relationship would not continue and would be terminated as soon as Pioli found a new club.

Despite having considered various possibilities in Italy (Bologna and Napoli), France (Rennes, where he would have reunited with Ricky Massara) and above all Saudi Arabia (Al-Ittihad), nothing materialised. Thus, Pioli is therefore still under contract with Milan.

The Rossoneri must pay him €4m net for the next season presuming he does not take a job. If Milan were to decide to remove Fonseca from his position they are almost certainly not going to turn back to Pioli, so – net of possible resolutions – the club could find themselves with three coaches under contract.
