One of Tottenham Hotspur‘s stars was wanted before the end of the special transfer window tonight, with a club having ‘tried to pull off a surprise’.
Spurs have just sacked Ange Postecoglou, with Thomas Frank coming in from Brentford to replace him, amid one player having called for the players to move on from the Australian.
On the squad side, the north London side have question marks over the futures of a number of their players, but they do not look to be in any hurry to make decisions now.
There has been much speculation about centre-back Cristian Romero, who is wanted by Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.
Diego Simeone’s men are involved in the approaching FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
They wanted to use the special transfer window for the tournament, which ends tonight, to hand Simeone the Spurs defender.
And, according to Spanish journalist Edu Burgos, Atletico Madrid ‘tried to pull off a surprise’ with the signing of Romero before the cut off.
No deal will happen though and the Tottenham centre-back will not be moving to the Spanish side before this evening’s 8pm deadline.
Atletico Madrid have not completely given up hope of signing Alex Baena from Villarreal, but the deal looks unlikely.
Tottenham may soon have to deal with an offer for another one of their players in the shape of Yves Bissouma.
The midfielder has been linked with Leeds United, but it is Fenerbahce who are looking to put together an offer for him.
