Rangers manager Philippe Clement has delivered some news Ibrox fans will want to hear, in that the rest of the transfer window will focus on bringing in quality experienced players, and that the early stages of the window were about bringing in the kids.

Having signed Oscar Cortes and Mohamed Diomande effectively permanently, while adding Connor Barron, Clinton Nsiala and Jefte to the Rangers ranks (as well as 28-year-old Liam Kelly), there had been some fears that the trade model and not success were the priority, but the boss has sought to reassure the fans that the quality is coming from here on in.

He said:

“We were focused on everything, but it is easier earlier to get the young players in, but for the rest of the transfer window there will also be experience coming into the building and we need a good balance in the squad and in the team of both. It was important to find these young talents and I think we have found a few really exciting players for the future for this club. We already have done a lot of things compared with other teams, but that was also necessary. We had five players leaving the building at the end of their contract, so we didn’t get any money in that way – and we lost five players.”

This appears to confirm the youngsters who have come in are the end of the youth additions, and that seems to spell the end of any pursuits of Yusuf Kabadayi and Hamza Igamane as well, given the complete silence on these deals amid reports that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Besiktas is moving in on the German especially.

But it’s the notion that the ‘quality’ and experienced players are still on the agenda that will be comforting to supporters.

Of course, we’re having to trust a man who promised us John Lundstram would sign a new deal, and that Borna Barisic was ‘hungry’ for more Rangers trophies, so we slightly take Clement’s comments with a pinch of salt these days, but we know the man will want better quality additions ready for immediate impact, after also admitting himself that the youngsters aren’t necessarily for the first team next season.

Lively times as always.
