The biggest disappointment to come out of Manchester City’s 6-nil win over Al Ain was the ankle injury sustained by Claudio Echeverri. The young attacking midfielder had scored a spectacular free kick and played well during the first half of Manchester City’s win at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But Echeverri was taken off at halftime of Manchester City’s win due to injury.
Now it has been revealed by Pep Guardiola just how long Claudio Echeverri will spend on the sidelines. It is a blow for Echeverri to spend time out due to injury. But he seems set for a minor spell on the sidelines rather than a prolonged period based on Pep Guardiola’s update.
Speaking during his pre-game press conference ahead of Manchester City’s final Group G fixture against Juventus, Pep Guardiola was asked about the extent of Claudio Echeverri’s injury. Echeverri was seen in a moon boot and on crutches at Manchester City training earlier this week. When asked about Echeverri’s injury, Pep Guardiola told the media: “He has some problems with his ankle. It will be two or three weeks out unfortunately, I feel so sorry for him, for all of us.”
It did seem that there was potential for Claudio Echeverri to be sidelined for a significant period. How Al Ain midfielder Yahia Nader fell across Echeverri’s ankle did suggest that he may have sustained a serious ankle injury. Based on Pep Guardiola’s update, Echeverri could potentially only be sidelined for up to three weeks. That could be the best-case scenario for Manchester City based on how Echeverri’s injury occurred.
Claudio Echeverri will miss Manchester City’s fixture against Juventus tonight. It also remains to be seen if he will play again at the FIFA Club World Cup. But he is out of action for at least a fortnight which is a cruel blow for a player who impressed against Al Ain.
