Chris Sutton doubts if Celtic are in a stronger position squad-wise after January transfer window

Celtic ended the January transfer window with the additions of Jota and Jeffrey Schlupp after losing Kyogo Furuhashi and Alex Valle, and Chris Sutton is far from convinced with the business done by the Parkhead club.

Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers wanted a new left-back, midfielder and a striker, and was linked with a deadline-day move for Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller.

However, Celtic only brought in Schlupp on loan from Crystal Palace, and while the versatile 32-year-old can play as a left-back, central midfielder, left winger and forward, it can be argued that the Bhoys did not successfully bolster their squad.

An unconvinced Sutton took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) this morning to react to the transfer window of Celtic after the winter market ended last night.

Celtic will be playing Bayern Munich later this month in the knockout double-legged play-offs in a bid to secure a place in the round of 16 of the Champions League, and it is safe to say losing Kyogo and failing to replace him has dealt a huge blow on their chances of progressing already.

They remain favourites to win the Scottish Premiership title having established a ten-point lead at the top of the table (with a game in hand), while adding the Scottish Cup to the Scottish League Cup they won last December is almost guaranteed.

Given their domestic dominance, fans want to see Celtic impress in Europe, but their campaign on the continent for this season looks over after they got drawn with Bayern in the knockout play-offs, and failure to strengthen their squad last month has not helped matters.

They will always remain a force to be reckoned with in Scotland but taking giant strides in Europe has always been tricky, and fans will not be shocked if they fail to progress beyond the knockouts this month.
