Tyrique George is pushing for a first Premier League start as Chelsea prepare to face Everton on Saturday.
George scored his first senior goal during the Conference League quarter-final win over Legia Warsaw earlier this month and then came off the bench to net a vital equaliser in last weekend’s dramatic comeback victory at Fulham.
With Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson both on long goal droughts, calls are growing for academy graduate George to be handed an opportunity from the start.
However, Enzo Maresca suggested on Friday that he will be cautious with the 19-year-old.
“We are excited with him, but now is the moment that you need to manage [young players] because too easy they can be excited and too easy they can be down,” the Chelsea boss said.
“Him and Josh Acheampong, both are from the academy. Both at the beginning of the season, they were looking for some different solution.
“But they started the pre-season with us and we saw that they could be a good one for us. So we decided to keep them and now both, I think, they are doing very well.”
Chelsea will be without Malo Gusto through injury, meaning Reece James could make a third consecutive start across all competitions.
Christopher Nkunku will also be back in the matchday squad, having been dropped for the trip to Fulham for “technical reasons”.
Wesley Fofana is out for the season for Chelsea and Marc Guiu not quite ready to return just yet, while Mykhailo Mudryk remains unavailable.
Predicted Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Neto; Jackson
Injured: Gusto, Fofana, Guiu, Kellyman
Unavailable: Mudryk
Time and date: 12:30pm BST on Saturday April 26, 2025
Venue: Stamford Bridge, London
