TuttoMercatoWeb in Italy are reporting on an interesting suggestion in the ongoing story of Cesare Casadei’s potential move back to the peninsula.
They say that Chelsea are ready to sell the midfielder to Torino, who are keen on the 21 year old. But the Blues want to include a “buy-back” clause, in an attempt to have their cake and eat it too.
We haven’t seen too many of these type of clauses used by Chelsea so far in the new sporting structure – is this report is true, it could represent a new stage in the project.
Until now, the focus has been on buying young talents and shedding the remnants of the old squad. Now that process is effectively complete, we could be seeing a new phase begin. Talents like who were brought in but can’t find a place in the squad (like Casadei) are ready to be sold on, but the Blues don’t want to lose out on any potential upside.

With the need to sell for cash to balance PSR now diminished, we may start to see more interesting deals like this one become more common as the sporting directors are able to take more gambles. They can accept a lower fee in the present in return for the chance to bring a player with lots of upside like Casadei back further down the line if he keeps developing and a space opens up for him in the squad.
We could even see a bit of the player trading style moves that are common with these deals in Italy and Spain – if Casadei does well at Torino and has top clubs trying to buy him for (say) £40m, and we have a buy back for £30, we could see use trigger the clause just to take the cream of that profit ourselves.
Did last summer’s sale of Diego Moreira with a similar clause hint at the start of something significant?
