So here we are again, watching Chelsea and Manchester United conduct business like rival auction houses, each trying to offload or acquire artistic flair as if prestige were measured in the number of wide players on the payroll. This time, the canvas is Alejandro Garnacho, a once-bright symbol of United’s youthful resurgence, now reduced to a commodity with a valuation of £70 million.

As reported by The Athletic, Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Garnacho, a winger described not long ago as indispensable. But modern football doesn’t deal in sentiment. “Chelsea have stepped up talks with Manchester United over a move for winger Alejandro Garnacho,” the report states, with the 21-year-old now expecting a move to Stamford Bridge.
This isn’t just about transfer fees or squad depth. It’s about identity, ambition, and the quietly toxic culture that has crept into Old Trafford like mould behind wallpaper.
It is no secret that Garnacho and United boss Ruben Amorim have had a turbulent relationship. “Amorim had told the 21-year-old, in front of his team-mates, to find a new club,” The Athletic reported. This, after Garnacho’s frustration at playing only 20 minutes in the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

His response was telling: “Up until the final, I’ve played every round, and today to play 20 minutes… I don’t know.”
United’s decision to sanction a deal for Benjamin Sesko only intensified speculation. Garnacho’s departure would mark the second consecutive summer that a United winger swaps red for blue, following Jadon Sancho’s loan to Chelsea last season.

United’s financial tightrope walk continues. In January, they reluctantly considered selling Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo to comply with Premier League regulations. Napoli made an approach, but United rejected it. Still, disciplinary issues persisted. Against Ipswich, Garnacho’s substitution tantrum led to an unusual punishment: “The forward had to pay for a team dinner by means of an apology.”
Despite this backdrop, the numbers speak volumes. Garnacho made 58 appearances last season, scoring 11 goals and registering 10 assists. These came in a team shorn of attacking options due to injury and poor recruitment.

For Chelsea, Garnacho would be their ninth summer signing, joining a youthful influx including Estevao and Jamie Gittens. After lifting both the Club World Cup and the Conference League, the Blues appear to be building something coherent, if not entirely comprehensible.
Garnacho may find more clarity in West London, even if that clarity comes with pressure and competition.
This one feels like déjà vu with a different hairstyle. Another winger from Manchester United, another mystery box of promise and petulance.Chelsea took a punt on Sancho, and now here they are, potentially repeating the cycle with Garnacho.
Yes, the numbers are there. Double digits in goals and assists, loads of appearances, some big-game moments. But is he what Chelsea need? Or is he another talented dribbler in a squad already full of them?
There’s also the attitude question. Paying for a team dinner because of a sulk? Frustration in a final is one thing, but can he channel it in the right way? Stamford Bridge is not a monastery of patience. Expectations are fierce, and Garnacho will need to grow up fast.
Still, the idea of poaching another United talent and developing him properly does have its allure. If he clicks, he could be a nightmare for defences and a bargain in hindsight. If not, he might just be another chapter in Chelsea’s long, winding tale of expensive wingers.
