Christopher Nkunku seemed like a key player when he arrived at Stamford Bridge, but the passage of time and constant managerial changes left him without a fixed position. Many fans remember his early moments of brilliance with fondness, although his inconsistency ultimately outweighed his goals.

Chelsea, in their attempt to reinvent themselves every summer, has seen this French striker as an asset that no longer quite fits. As Enzo Maresca takes the reins of a dressing room full of new faces, fresh names such as Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens are emerging to claim the limelight. Thus, Nkunku’s future remains up in the air.

According to The Metro, the London club is close to completing a deal to sign Joao Pedro from Brighton, a move that could speed up the Frenchman’s departure. Nkunku himself has contributed to 20 goals, but he still hasn’t fully convinced the new manager. Chelsea not only closed the deal for Pedro but also made progress with Borussia Dortmund to convince them to let Jamie Gittens go.

With these moves, it is clear that Stamford Bridge are preparing for a major overhaul. The club have offered the striker to Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham, aware that one of them might be tempted to revive the player’s career in the Premier League.

Opinion:

We think Chelsea are rushing into things if they give the green light to Nkunku’s departure without giving him one last real chance under Maresca. It is true that the Frenchman has not found consistency, but twenty goals or assists in a season without rhythm are numbers that many teams would want.

João Pedro and Gittens bring freshness, yes, but selling a valuable asset to direct rivals such as Arsenal or Manchester United could backfire. Imagining Nkunku reactivated with a decisive goal in a derby could hurt more than any income from his sale. On the other hand, the Premier League demands adaptation and character, and if Maresca already feels that he does not fit in, perhaps his departure is inevitable.

We do not believe that Chelsea are seeking to weaken their rivals by offering them Nkunku; rather, it seems to be a manoeuvre to lighten a forward line saturated with promise without burning bridges with foreign leagues that may not match the offer. Ultimately, the Frenchman deserves one last chance to prove he can perform in England.

If that doesn’t happen, his return to the Bundesliga, where Bayern are still on the prowl, would make more sense. Chelsea should balance the risks and not rush into anything: freeing up space is fine, but getting rid of a player capable of making a difference in a bad year could turn out to be a decision they regret when they least expect it.
