The debate has raged pretty much since Christmas, as Jadon Sancho’s initial burst of form at Chelsea faded along with the team’s fortunes – should the Blues pay the £25m to sign him permanently this summer, or pay the reported £5m penalty fee to not sign him?

The anti-Sancho camp gained a lot of momentum, although the fact he’s picked up a few goal contributions in his last few games and improved his overall form has slightly swung things back towards the pro-Sancho camp.

Well, the whole argument may now be moot anyway. It was reported over the weekend that Chelsea’s win over Fulham had guaranteed them to finish high enough in the table that the purchase option was to be triggered, meaning it was decision time.

And today CaughtOffside repot that the Chelsea have “already activated the clause” to make his loan a permanent deal. It seems those in charge at the top of the club were never as conflicted as the fans debating the issue on social media.

Sancho set for Chelsea stay – but maybe not for long

We always suspected they would do this. Even though Sancho has largely disappointed, he’s a decent squad player at best, and for £25m we could do a lot worse. We wouldn’t be at all surprised if the plan was to loan him out and try to flip him for a profit further down the line, as was speculated back when the original debate was raging.

There’s set to be a few changes in attack this summer with Estevao Willian arriving and the likes of Christopher Nkunku set to leave. It will be interesting to see what Sancho’s status is once the summer ends and all the shuffling of assets is complete.
