Chelsea are set to “strike a deal” with Manchester United to sign Jadon Sancho, David Ornstein has revealed.

The Athletic journalist reports the London club are “expected” to complete the signing of the 24-year-old winger before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Though Ornstein reveals there are “no formal agreements” in place yet, he states that the “situation [is] advancing that way”.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano corroborates this assessment by detailing negotiations are “ongoing” between United and Chelsea officials after a loan proposal was tabled earlier today.

Ornstein, the gold standard within football journalism, is confident these talks will end positively. “Chelsea are expected to reach agreement with Manchester United to sign Jadon Sancho before the transfer window closes,” he writes.

Sancho is described as “keen” on [the] proposed move to Stamford Bridge” after a pursuit by Serie A side Juventus failed.

The Italian club tabled a loan offer to their Old Trafford counterparts but it was rejected as it did not satisfy the financial demands United have established in order to accept such a proposal.

United’s preference had been to sell Sancho on a permanent deal this summer. A price tag of £40 million was set for the 24-year-old but there was zero interest from potential suitors in such a figure.

The club were also open to a loan with an obligation to buy; which Ornstein reveals Chelsea are now in negotiations to match.

Tweet: “Negotiations between Chelsea & Manchester United over #DeadlineDay transfer of Jadon Sancho centre on initial loan with obligation to buy next summer. Would provide permanent solution 24yo sought; #CFC / #MUFC discussing obligation figure @TheAthleticFC”

This constitutes a potentially significant boost for United as their patience in waiting for the right offer to materialise for Sancho appears to have paid dividends.

The decision to reintegrate the winger back into the the fold under Erik ten Hag following the pair’s dispute always felt more like an exercise in maintaining value in the market than a genuine return for the 24-year-old.

However, if United are able to agree a permanent exit, through a loan with an obligation to buy next summer, for a player who is as keen to depart the club as the club are for him to depart, it will be hard to argue with the approach.
