Chelsea took the spoils from Thursday’s London derby with Tottenham after goals in either half.

Nicolas Jackson enjoyed an early opening but saw his effort over Guglielmo Vicario scooped clear by Micky van de Ven’s goal-line clearance.

The Blues finally took the lead midway through the first half when Trevoh Chalobah met Conor Gallagher’s free kick with a looping header.

Cristian Romero attempted to stir a fightback before the interval by meeting Pedro Porro’s cross to the far post wide but headed it wide.

Ange Postecoglou rang the changes after the interval with James Maddison, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur all introduced.

But the hosts asserted their dominance through Jackson’s rebound header after Cole Palmer’s free kick crashed back off the crossbar.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side moved ahead of West Ham into eight place while Tottenham remain seven points adrift of a Champions League spot by staying fifth.
