Chelsea could spend £100m on striker they really want – there is precedent

The number of teams wanting to sign a striker this summer is huge, as always, and Chelsea, as always, are among them.

The same names have come up again and again: Liam Delap, Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres.

But one which has bubbled under the surface a little are the links to Hugo Ekitike. He’s certainly not in the same category as those 3 when it comes to the weight of rumours, but there’s also a good chance that all 3 of them have big moves lined up already.

There’s no reason to assume we won’t be looking down to 4th or 5th place on our shortlist before too long, so it’s important we keep our minds open in terms of targeting players.

Chelsea might be ready to break the bank for elite player

CaughtOffside today carry a report from RMC Sport which claims that the 22 year old is in demand from a number of Premier League teams, and will have a monster €80m-100m price tag on his head this summer.

That will put a lot of teams off – it’s very hard to see Chelsea paying that. On the other hand, when they found the players they really wanted in midfield, at the right age and on the right contract, they weren’t afraid to spend big.

Who’s to say they won’t finally green-light a major striker purchase this summer, having kept their powder dry last summer (and then paid the price)?

Chelsea face serious challenges signing striker

The RMC Sport story says Ekitike is “very high” on our shortlist, and are increasing efforts to get a deal done. There is a lot of competition, Frankfurt are in a strong position with his contract, able to demand a lot of money and force the player to stay if they want. This is certainly not going to be an easy one to pull off.
