Chelsea have reportedly put an end to transfer negotiations with AC Milan over a deal for Mike Maignan.
The Blues were looking to sign a new starting goalkeeper ahead of the Fifa Club World Cup, which kicks off in the United States next week.
A specially designated transfer window was opened between 1 June and 10 June so that participating teams could sign new players before the competition gets underway.
Chelsea are one of several clubs trying to get deals done before Tuesday’s deadline, but have seemingly given up on signing Maignan for now.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that the south west London outfit are “not willing” to meet Milan‘s asking price as they refuse to pay a Club World Cup “tax”.
It had been previously reported that Chelsea would not pay more than £12.6 million (€15m) for a player who will turn 30 in July.
Maignan’s contract with Milan expires in 2026, meaning he will be a free agent next summer unless he agrees to renew terms.
Chelsea “maintain full trust” in their current suite of goalkeepers; Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic and Filip Jorgensen.
The Premier League outfit are also said to be in talks with Borussia Dortmund over a deal for winger Jamie Gittens. The 20-year-old is reportedly valued at around £42m (€50m).
Chelsea did announce they had completed a transfer on Monday after signing teenage defender Mamadou Sarr from Ligue 1 club RC Strasbourg. The 19-year-old, who played a key role in helping the club qualify for Europe next season, has signed a contract until 2033.
