Enzo Maresca has said Chelsea are waiting to discover the extent of Cole Palmer’s groin injury.
Palmer pulled out of Friday’s 5-1 win over West Ham United after suffering discomfort in his groin.
Maresca confirmed that the influential midfielder has been managing the issue and that Chelsea did not want to take any risks with Palmer’s fitness. Though he was unable to give a timescale on Palmer’s return, he was hopeful the injury will not prove to be long-term.
“Cole in the last four or five days was not one hundred per cent,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference.
“Today (Friday) he tried in the warm-up, but he felt something, so we preferred not to take any risks and make it worse, and we will see in the next hours if it’s something important or not.
“It’s a groin problem. It’s already the Palace game he was not one hundred per cent for, but he has tried to make a big effort for the club, for the team, for the fans, because he is really keen about the team. Tonight he tried again but it was not very good.”
In Palmer’s absence, Chelsea came from behind to thrash West Ham at the London Stadium.
Joao Pedro netted his first Premier League goal for the club, with further strikes from Pedro Neto, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Trevoh Chalobah sealing the win.
Chelsea are next in action against West London rivals Fulham on August 30th.
