Charlton Athletic have their fair share of attacking talent at their disposal in League One this season, with a number of sharpshooters vying to start up top for the Addicks in the current campaign.

After seeing least season’s top goalscorer Alfie May depart for Birmingham City in the summer, the Addicks added Matt Godden and Gassan Ahadme to their frontline, to join the likes of Miles Leaburn, Tyreece Campbell and Daniel Kanu as the attacking options at the club.

With the new arrivals already proven EFL goalscorers, it is no surprise to see Nathan Jones favour the pair in terms of first-team selection, with Kanu the one to miss out the most, after just a handful of starts so far this season.

With that in mind, we spoke to Football League World’s Charlton Athletic fan pundit Ben Fleming about January plans for the club, and what players may benefit from a loan away from the club.

Daniel Kanu struggles for game time at Charlton Athletic

Having joined National League club Southend United on loan during the previous campaign, Kanu was soon recalled back to The Valley as Athletic’s attacking ranks were depleted, and began to make his mark in the Addicks’ frontline.

Playing alongside May up top, the teenager featured 30 times for the club where he rose up through the academy, and scored six times in what proved to be a breakthrough year for the forward.

But this season has seen him relegated back to much more of a watching brief, with starts proving to be few and far between, as the more experienced members of the squad are being given the nod in his place.

That is not something that is lost on Fleming, who earmarked the striker for a temporary switch elsewhere when asked about the situation at the club heading into January: “In terms of loan moves, I would think probably Daniel Kanu is a possibility.

“He had a really good spell under Nathan Jones at the back end of last season - him and Alfie May - but obviously Alfie has gone and we have brought in Matt Godden, Gassan Ahadme and Tyreece Campbell is playing up there centrally.

“Miles Leaburn has come back as well, so that is a lot of names ahead of him in the queue, and he has not started a lot of games. So it could be a case of sending him out to a team in League Two.”

Daniel Kanu will be hoping for Southend United repeat if loan deal is confirmed

If he is to seal a move away from The Valley for the remainder of the 24/25 campaign, Kanu will be hoping he can recreate some of the form he showed the last time he was sent out on loan.

A six-game stint at Roots Hall in the National League last season saw the frontman net four times in a 5-0 defeat of Solihull Moors, as he immediately proved the quality he has by dropping down the pyramid, leaving Jones [pictured] with no option but to welcome him back into the fold by December.

Some stellar showings upon his return to the capital showcased a player who was high on confidence following his stint away from the club, and had a point to prove that he is able to cut it in the third tier and beyond.

With age still on his side, a repeat of that deal could be of the benefit of both player and club in the long-term future, although Fleming is in two minds as to whether any move away would be ratified by the club.

He continued: “He was obviously at Southend for a bit last season and then we brought him back when injuries were bad, so maybe it isn’t one you want to do because you want him around for squad depth.

“But it feels like he could be doing with playing regular game time, and other than that I wouldn’t say there is anyone else who might go out on loan.

“Maybe at the start of the season I would have said someone like Terry Taylor because he wasn’t getting much game time, but he seems to have weaved his way back onto the pitch and getting game time, so I don’t think you would want to send him out on loan.”

“I think even someone like Zach Mitchell got some game time in the FA Cup, so out of everyone maybe Dan, but I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he stayed to provide some squad depth."
