CHAN 2024: DR Congo accuses Kenya of spying
Just hours before their debut in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Democratic Republic of Congo finds itself at the center of an unexpected controversy.
During a press conference on Saturday morning, Leopards head coach Otis N'Goma publicly accused Kenya of spying during their final training session:
We noticed suspicious movements around our training ground. Such behavior does not honor a competition like CHAN.
On Sunday, DR Congo faces Kenya's Harambee Stars at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium. This Group A clash marks the tournament's kickoff for both teams, with an increasingly tense atmosphere setting the stage.
Double CHAN champions (2009, 2016) and the most experienced nation in the competition with seven appearances, DR Congo enters the tournament as a team to watch. However, the tension surrounding this opening fixture may distract from the football itself. Despite the controversy, the Leopards hope to kick off their campaign with a win before facing Angola and Morocco in a tough group.
